The Ocklawaha River
Ray Wayside (Silver River) to Gores Landing
From the Ray Wayside Park ramp, there is a short canal, leading to the Silver River before it meets the Ocklawaha River. Here we are bordered by Carolina Ash, Bald Cypress, Swamp Tupelo, Red Maples, and the characteristic Sabal Palmettos. The combination of Bald Cypress, Swamp Tupelo, and Carolina Ash created natural arches overhead as they predominantly lean in toward the river. Numerous Swamp Lilies bloomed throughout this section and we were also treated to the very colorful Scarlot Rose Mallow and several Pink Swamp Mallow. Mexican Primrose Willow displayed numerous yellow blossoms and the Dahoon Holly trees were full of bright red berries. This section has plenty of winding turns, and several sections with high bluffs, especially at the 4-mile mark, a great place to take a break.
Be aware of the downfall in the river and low-hanging branches if you have the canopy up!
